Austrotherm. The insulation pioneer

Austrotherm is the specialist for high-quality and forward-looking thermal and sound insulation in Central and Eastern Europe. The company was founded by Oswald Nowotny, who in 1953 was the first Austrian to produce polystyrene. Simply put, he was a true pioneer.

Pioneer of cutting-edge insulation solutions

Shortly after the opening up of Eastern Europe, Austrotherm was one of the first companies to operate in the Eastern European market. The Austrotherm Group is now made up of companies in 11 countries with 19 production sites.

A strong tradition

10 years after it was founded, Oswald Nowotny built an insulation board factory in Purbach on Lake Neusiedl, which successfully met the growing demand for insulation boards until the 1980s. In 1980, Friedrich Schmid acquired the company Nowotny, followed by the acquisition of another plant in Pinkafeld in 1982. Extruded polystyrene rigid foam, known as XPS, has been produced in Purbach since 1990. Before this, the majority of XPS had to be imported into Austria from large, global chemical companies. This was another pioneering achievement by the Austrian company.

The future is green

At the end of the 1990s, Austrotherm engineers achieved great success with a new generation of insulation boards using cells filled with air. "Austrotherm XPS TOP" meets the highest ecological standards. In 2010, another production milestone was reached with the construction of a production facility for the new, slim Austrotherm EPS® PLUS insulation board in Pinkafeld. And in addition to various awards and certifications, the plant in Pinkafeld was named the first Climate Alliance company in the Burgenland region.
